Butcher Blocks

Posted on: 10-6-2010 Posted in: Classic Furniture

ilovani’s Butcher Blocks draw inspiration from old fashioned chopping blocks. These blocks were end-grain designed – and for good reason. The principle behind the design is that knives stay sharper for longer and the surface remains unscratched.

Individual blocks of wood are arranged in such a way that the grain of wood runs vertically. This design ensures that the cutting surface is actually the end of many individual pieces of hardwood. When the knife strikes the surface, instead of crushing the blade against the wood fibres, the fibres separate and the blade slips between, much like cutting into a very firm brush. The grains then close again on removal of the blade.

In short, the life span of your blade is extended and no marks are left on your chopping board.

The Butcher Blocks are available as free blocks or as a free-standing work bench with either steel or wooden legs. Choose between Cottonwood or Eucalyptus. A valuable addition to any kitchen.
