Wine Barrels are traditionally made from French Oak and have a limited life span. These beautiful, used wine or brandy infused woods have, in the past, been discarded. ilovani has undertaken to remedy this tragedy: incorporating these pieces of oak into functional items of home ware. The discarded French Oak wine barrels are bought in a retired, dilapidated state from South African wine farms. After drying and cleaning, the Barrel staves are worked and sanded repeatedly, assuring a smooth finish that restores them back to their original form and traditional glory.
The Wine Barrel staves are recycled into innovative, functional items such as wine racks, firewood holders, hanging chairs, hammocks and more. Discarded barrel tops and bottoms are used as cheese, bread or cutting boards and are fully reversible. The sizes vary – the average is 550mm in diameter and approximately 25mm thick.
